Psychological Testing

Psychologists use standardized psychometric tests and other assessment tools to measure and observe a client’s behavior to arrive at a diagnosis and guide treatment. Psychological testing, assessment, and evaluation involves a complex process requiring multiple appointments over the course of several weeks. The purpose of evaluating a person is to better understand the root of a problem and learn how a client uniquely functions. Using a combination of psychometrics, testing batteries, rating scales, observation, and clinical interviews, the psychologist will determine the underlying causes of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral conditions. It is similar to your primary care provider who may order blood tests to understand what’s causing those symptoms. The results of the tests will help inform develop a treatment plan.

Our practice offers comprehensive psychological evaluations to assess a variety of concerns, to include ADHD, cognitive and memory problems, emotional concerns, academic difficulties, as well as targeted assessment for a specific referral question such as presurgical psychological evaluations for weight loss surgery or spinal cord stimulators.

Testing is offered as a standalone service or can be a helpful adjunct to ongoing therapy. Testing will not be offered by your individual therapist but by a testing psychologist on our team. Testing can be helpful to identify findings that affect functioning in a range of areas to determine appropriate treatment strategies. We offer a collaborative experience where client feedback is welcome throughout the assessment process.

Regarding the entire evaluation process, you can expect a collaborative multi-visit assessment involving the client including family members (spouses, parents/legal guardians), coworkers/teachers, referral source (e.g., primary care provider), and other helping professionals. At the end of the full evaluation, you will receive a written report and meet with one of our psychologists to discuss practical recommendations.
